Which dog breed was bred for mountain rescues?

I remember a cartoon where a Saint Bernard reaches the victim, opens the little barrel, and mixes himself a martini.

Originally St Bernards were bred to protect the monks, not rescue travellers. That came later. I used to breed St Bernards and absolutely loved my babies. I chose to stop after the film Beethoven came out as so many people wanted them and had no idea of their very specific requirements.

Always wanted a tiny keg for my hunting dog. Always nice, a big swig of good Brandy, like putting on a warm sweater as you feel it spread thru your chest into your stomach. Found a nice flask instead...
