Patti, and the reason Columbus is credited with discovering America is because of those who may have arrived before him, nothing came of it. The Vikings likely came, but went back not long after and never really returned. After Columbus, several European nations started sending explorers and settlers.

Player #8915156, Prior to the United States of America, just been shortened to "America" in mostly English speaking countries, the entire continent was known as America. Then new continental classifications were drawn and America is usually refer to the US, but not always exclusively. Its also acknowledged the Christopher Columbus "discovered" for the Europeans the New World.
