I have been a tennis fan since I saw Mr Ashe win the inaugural U S Open in 1968 @ Forest Hills. I remember his Wimbledon victory and his dance with the female champ in 1975 Billie Jean King. A great tennis player and a greater person. His courage has inspired many. And he was socially conscience & lent his name and services to promote justice. It is fitting that his is name of the main stadium at the new home of the US Open. He epitomizes what a true American hero should be...Using his celebrity to shine a light on injustices and bringing forth positive change.

I never met the man in my life but my impressions from sports and news coverage was that he was a true class act who did some great work for others before he passed away.

I remember he was the first person I started watching in his sport. My mother loved him and started playing for fun as a senior citizen because of him.

Mary, white history has been since the beginning of time. We now have Black history, Native American History, Asian History Month to recognize the contributions of those who WERE Previously OMITTED from American History. If you go to Constitution Hall in Phily the tour guide now says Constitution left out women, minorities and only included white men. Know your history, Mary!

This was a tragedy of an enormous scope - he was a great man and really fought to educate people about this disease; it wasn't his fault he needed a blood transfusion !!

Phenomenal human being! In the 1980s - 90s, when African Americans were beginning to be "accepted" with values of heroism - he was monumental man for soul-stirring consciousness. I appreciate his lifetime epitaph.

I would also like to add one more comment and I will more no one any further on the topic unless someone would like to talk about it with me I feel free to if you like. I am very knowledgeable of this topic due to the loss of a close personal loving human being that I had the pleasure of knowing and growing up with as we were little children because this close personal loving human being that I am speaking of happens to be my late cousin Johnny. my cousin was more than just my cousin he was my brother like a brother to me that a brother could get as close as a brother to get I loved him truly and dearly and I miss him so I miss him so much. he passed away in the early 90s from full blown AIDS.. he has dated females but then he realized he was a homosexual and I said Johnny this is not a homosexual lesbian or

I remember Mr Arthur Ashe very well I watched him as a tennis pro and I recall when he announced that he had HIV my heart goes out to this gentleman and many many thousands and thousands upon thousands more people that have died and contracted HIV and AIDS. who I pray for those who currently live in today's society with HIV and AIDS everyday that they breathe. but people with this terrible disease can still live normal lives or as normal as one can by taking daily proper prescribed medications, exercising, eating 3 well balanced meals daily, getting proper rest and at least 8 hours of sleep avoiding drugs and alcohol and cigarette smoking
