When I was a teenager Cohen came to my school to give a special recital for us. That was the time when he was having his first successes and with the girl who inspired the song 'Suzanne'

Loved this song since I first heard it and to this day I still cry when I hear it. This had to come from deep in his heart! What a beautiful song.

It isn't a hymn but a song written about his mistress and their sex life. I smile evey Christmas season as it is blasted all over the stores especially Hobby Lobby.

While this question may be slightly esoteric for some - if you haven't heard the song you should and you should hear Jeff Buckley sing it...Cohen is a brilliant writer no doubt but Buckley's voice - gorgeous

Phadraiga, I went to see him every time he played in Ireland, both North and South. I loved this man. He was such a gentleman, gracious to whomever he shared the stage with and to his audience! I miss him. RIP Lennie.

Such a great artist! He was often considered a pessimist. He argued that a pessimist was someone who believed it was always going to rain...but he was drenched to the bone.

Teslasgirl66, In my experience with the church, this song would be considered blasphemous and sexually explicit! "... you saw her bathing on the roof..", and "...She cut your hair and from your lips she drew a hallelujah..."! "The only thing you learned from love was how to shoot the man who outdrew you!" Not exactly quoted from the bible!

Wendell Thomas, The song isn't about religion. The words say, "...it's not someone who's seen the light..." I think it's about adult love, after the illusions are gone.
