Angel Smith, my daughter was also jaundice, but we didnt notice until about a day after her birth. Thankfully she was a June baby and summer babies do much better with it because the sun. I hated it when they took her from me and put that mask on her little face. she was screaming. Praise God she's fine now.

zoidberg316, Not necessarily, chronic alcoholism can lead to cirrhosis of the liver, which will cause jaundice, but all types of hepatitis, liver cancer cholecystitis (inflammation of the gall bladder) gall stones and many other conditions, can cause jaundice. Oh! and the answer given was incorrect. You can't have "too much bile" Bile acid malabsorption can cause diarrhoea, but won't cause jaundice. Jaundice is caused by bile entering the blood stream instead of the intestines, (to put it in simple terms.)

Angel Smith, Glad your daughter is healthy after all. I'm a little confused that your husband was going to perform surgery on his own child? Most Doctors usually won"t do that.

ArmedGnome37564, Yes my twins where as well. Being 9 weeks early their little livers where having trouble. It's not uncommon for babies born early to have jaundice. It's amazing how the U.V light helps the skin get rid of the bile build up. Yes where would we be with out modern science. I know I owe a lot to the scientific community of this era

the special lamp is one that has a full spectrum bulb in it. A nurse discovered that babies put by the windows in the ward were healed from the sunlight. and some doctors think nurses are not as smart as them. ha.

Jaundice is not too much bile, it's the build up of bilirubin which is processed by the liver. Bad question

This is demonstrably incorrect, as the explanation itself points out. Jaundice is not an excess of bile. Jaundice is an excess of bilirubin. Bile fluid contains more than one pigment and is not found in the blood, but in the biliary tree. Since high serum bilirubin levels cause jaundice, of the available options the most physiologically accurate would be "too much blood", even if it is only one component of the circulating blood that is responsible. Additionally, when the situation of "too much blood" arises, the result would likely be haemolysis. What does haemolysis result in? Jaundice.

One of the reasons this can happen in babies , has to do with the mother having a negative blood type and the baby having a positive blood type. The mother's body attacks the baby because of its positive blood .It sees it as something foreign and this is the bodies response to try and protect itself. It is very important for the doctor to check the mother's blood type early in her first pregnancy. I have a negative blood type and because my husband has a positive blood type , I had to go get a shot a few months into my pregnancy for the babies protection. After the baby is born they check the babies blood type and if it is positive, another shot has to be given. My first child had a positive blood type so I am thankful I had a good doctor looking after us. My aunt was not as fortunate as I was, she also has a negative blood type and gave birth to a positive baby. she did not get the shot during her pregnancy and her baby was very sick and jaundice when he was born . she was told she could not have more kids because it would be too dangerous for the baby . A positive blood type mother don't need the shot , she can carry a baby with a negative blood type . It is only in the mother with a negative blood type , that could potentially have a baby with a positive blood type , that needs the shot ( so only if the dad is positive) because 2 negatives can't make a positive.

jaundice is caused by an accumulation of billirubin which comes from the breakdown of haemoglobin from red blood cells. the liver usually breaks down billirubin and eliminates it. faulty liver or too much redcell destruction is the issue. nothing to do with bile.
