Made only by males with no known use. I wonder what kind of noise the useful males make.

Player Mz. Peggy, the Pistol shrimp uses the rapid snap when hunting. They close their main claw that quickly it super heats the sea water and creates an almost boiling jet if water to attack prey or defend against other shimp. Absolutely incredible little creature.

The howler monkey is loudest land animal and can be heard 3 miles away, but I wonder where the wolf sits on the db scale as they can be heard up to 10 miles away.

I did not know this about sperm whales! I thought tiger pistol shrimp would hold the record, as I knew they literally stun their prey with the sound, but hey, you live and you learn. Great question!

Saying that in snapping shut its claw the TPShrimp creates a sonic boom suggests that the pincers of the claw move faster than the speed of sound. At 1480m/s speed of sound is over 4x faster than in air. I find this hard to believe. Am I missing something?

Pchblsom, I heard Howler Monkeys when I was on holiday in the Amazon Region of Peru once. I was thrilled, I thought it was an awesome sound! But I'd probably be like you if I lived with them all the time 🐒
