Player #28262406, I do agree that it's an obscene amount of money but it is also a tangible piece of history and a work by one of history's geniuses...in so many areas. The additional shame and obscenity is that it's in someone's private collection and not being displayed for the world to admire and enjoy.

I would want to be sure it wasn't a fake before I spent that much on it.

Only because many other priceless ones are not, and never will be, for sale! ;)

Recently discovered that the hands were added by someone else and the sphere one holds probably depicts glass not rock crystal, but otherwise the rest of the painting is Leonardo's.(There's written comments from a contemporary that he was in the habit of doing the main body of whatever work and then allowing pupils to finish it. )
