When I was very young, it was my job to feed Grandma's chickens in her chicken yard. One usually takes some feed and flings it so as to spread it about. One day I noticed the chickens would line up wherever I put the feed- in a perfect line, in a circle, and various geometric shapes. This was quite curious and encouraged my experiment further. I then decided to delve deeper into the psyche of the chicken. With great abandon, I flung a great handful and ran for the other end of the yard, repeating this action several times. Fun for me was panic for the chickens. They were squawking and running madly about and yes, yes, they were flying, (some landing in low branches). Grandma abruptly ended the project, however, fortunately for you I can now share my data. Proof "Chickens Fly.

My chickens often sleep high in the trees, they FLY up onto the branches. Anyone that thinks chickens don't fly at all in nature have lost all touch with nature and probably think chickennuggets come in a natural shape and that milk comes out of a factory as well? :)

Lady V, I have seen it too. They were some that had gotten away from a farm and now live in the wild. I was camping out there and they made a lot of noise.

Lala, They do have a strange nervous system. If their not held down when the head comes off, they will run and fly around for a good 15 seconds or so, I guess trying to walk it off.

Ive seen one fly with its head chopped off...think it went longer than 15 seconds...horrible experience when I was about 6 years old.

My parents' next door neighbors had a chicken farm in their back yard, and frequently their chickens would fly over the 7' fence into my parents' yard. But that probably took only a few seconds. NB: That farm was illegal within the city limits, so we eventually got rid of those neighbors.
