JezzerLX, Maggots are used differently than leeches. Leeches are used in blood letting; maggots are used to chew away dead flesh, leaving just healthy flesh. Maggots aided in wound healing. Both treatments were used extensively during the Civil War.

Player #4250921, leeches are sometimes used to 'prevent' gangrene in skin grafts. New grafts may not have the blood vessels to drain blood leading to fresh blood being unable to get to cells. Leeches will ingest the trapped blood resolving the problem. I had leech treatment for a nose graft after cancer treatment... a hideous experience.
