I thought she was an amazing combination of attributes - she never appeared to be acting, only being herself on the screen, but she had amazing screen presence and personality. All in all, I think of her as being "one in a century", which is a lot to say of anyone, but who else was ever like her?

Maybe the industry that created her as a sex symbol was reluctant to acknowledge the fact that she'd become a full fledged, multi-talented actress, worthy of respect as more than just eye candy. In effect, she was the good time girl, fine for a fling, but not to take home to the serious and proper Oscar family. Just a theory.
