Which extinct animal is closely related to elephants?

Mammoth site was uncovered not far from us. Pretty cool to visit knowing these massive creatures once existed in our area. Elephants should be protected before they join their ancestors as just a memory. Sad to know they're not protected from poachers.

And how long before our precious, beautiful elephants become extinct due to man's greed?
