This alphabet is excellent for making sure that when pilots, police and emergency services are relating number plates or aeroplane numbers, the receiver gets the correct identification letters. Especially if there is interference on the transmitter.

As a Signalman in the RASIGS, or Royal Australian Corps of Signals I was required to learn this alphabet.
Each letter is distinctly different from all the others. Obviously it's vital that messages are transmitted such that there is no room for error. In the heat of battle it saves lives.

IRENE, it is a whole alphabet and is integral in communication and widely used each letter of the alphabet has its own word to make it clear what that letter is if you are speaking over network police officers for instance or from control to officers or similar it makes it so that there is no miscommunication because some letters of the alphabet are easy to miss hear over the Airwaves

I'm not convinced "strictly" (mis)spelling "Alpha" is important in a phonetic alphabet, when you are pronouncing them out loud, not writing them down!
