The word 'Pacific' means what?

The Maori name for the Pacific Ocean means, "The great ocean of Kiwa." Kiwa is the Maori name for the Polynesian goddess of the sea. I can not imagine anyone considering this ocean to be calm or peaceful.

What's in a name? Sometimes not so much. The world's largest and deepest ocean which is known for it's cataclysmic typhoons happened to be calm as a sheet of glass with favorable light winds when Magellan sailed he named this new found ocean incognita the Pacific because it was relatively peacefulr

Yes Pacific Ocean is calm & peaceful unless there’s an under water volcanic happening or earthquakes. I love my ocean.
