so tired of the slavery debate. news to all that say whites owned slaves and were racist. do some research. the first slave owner in North America was a black man who owned a black slave and white slaves also existed. mostly put in slavery thru the debtor's prison.

I knew this cuz that's where I'm from. I've been to Mount Rushmore quite a few times. 🙂 It's good but I think the Crazy Horse monument is so much better!

BeatriceBradford234, Lincoln and Roosevelt didn't own slaves. Lincoln freed the slaves. Washington and Jefferson set their own slaves free upon their deaths.

MooingClearnes Lincoln freed the slaves. But he was ADAMANT that black and white people NOT integrate at all. NOT be taught together, live together etc. Despite that, I LOVE Lincoln. Because unlike every OTHER racist. He understood that for free blacks to survive, they needed a stake. 40 acres of land and a mule. Which no freed slave got b/c Lincoln was killed. Black people being free? was a cruel joke. They had to work for their "masters" just to eat. And they were not paid a livable wage. Do you really think that was fair?

Typhani, You're correct on that. As a matter of fact Lincolns father had a huge slave plantation, that Lincoln would have likely received on his fathers death. He was also quoted as when talks of freeing the slaves began "as to what to do with them" and one of his ideas was to round them all up and drop them somewhere off American land. He truly did not care about the slaves. Just as much as they still don't care about the Indigionous Natives. Since they still haven't given my cousins back their treaty land at Rushmore. Anything to get rid of us to this day they will do it. I'm Shawnee/Shawanwaki Native American on my dad's side, German Ashkenazi Jew on my moms. They should know q & a on topic, stirs the pot.

I'm no fan of slavery so don't misinterpret my words. The Greeks were enslaved by the Romans as also were many English people. And don't forget, the slave traders bringing Africans to the Colonies received their slaves from other African tribes.
