I live in Florida so this one was easy for me. St Augustine is an amazing city. I even drank from the Fountain of youth but it didn't work for me. 😝

schools should emphasize this part of history more. Seems books mostly concentrate on Pilgrams, Puritans, and the original colonies. Plenty was happening elsewhere in the land that became the United States.

When you visit, don't take the train or guided tours. It's a rip-off. Place is small enough. Plenty of metered street parking (cheaper than the "packages" offered at ridiculous prices) throughout the small village. Walk around leisurely. Not that large, really. A1A is a terrific route south beside the Atlantic.

So... as usual the indigenous people of the Americas are ignored. They were not ALL nomads you know, ever hear of Mesa Verde?

WaldoLydeker, that would be your biased opinion. being that it was my first time to visit St. Augustine, the guided tour guides on the train who live there and know the history on top of being taught some stuff, I found it to be a GREAT history lesson. This allows you to gain information before picking and choosing which attraction to visit to gain more information about history.

If we are going to be realistic, we need to look at the people who were here FIRST, the Indigenous people beat out the Spaniards and the guy who got lost looking for India, Since 1150 A.D., Acoma Pueblo has earned the reputation as the oldest continuously inhabited community in North America. The mesa-top settlement is known worldwide for its unique art and rich culture.

actually it isn't. Pensacola is. St Augustine is the oldest CONTINUOUSLY inhabited but not oldest. Pensacola lost its original settlers due to disease & hurricane.

Montana Lady, while I agree with you regarding the indigenous people, Mesa Verde has not been inhabited for many a year. Acoma Pueblo (Sky City) in New Mexico is the oldest continuously inhabited place in the United States.

jerezaa, also Pilgrims and Puritans are different denominational sects. Puritans are Calvinists (also called Reformed) and they held a number of different beliefs from the Pilgrims, though they were sent over to the USA together.

I used to be a history tour guide in St. Augustine. The wording of this question is wrong. It is the oldest continuously inhabited city of European origin in the US. Not the oldest city.
