Was never formally trained, just a short class in high school, but performed it on a friend and saved his life after he overdosed on heroin; only to find him dead on a couch a few months later after he promised me that he wouldn't do it again....21 years past...{ hope you're resting peacefully, Dusty}😔

I used chest compression to help a man who collapsed in the adult evening classroom next to mine. The class was full and a nurse asked for help and no one stepped up. I didn't have formal training but since no one else helped I volunteered. The medics brought him back, and I will never know if he truly survived, but I was shaken up the next day realizing how fragile life is.

constantgamer0421, I was delivering mail one day and saw a guy collapse. I performed CPR on him as he was turning blue, and brought him back. I found out later that it was a heroin o.d. I often wonder what became of him.

this is not true. I collect antique books specializing in medicine. I have one dated 1916 and it talks about CPR.

"Mouth to mouth" is generally not done nowadays.

I have been at a preschool for 19 years and we are certified in first aid training and CPR and yes mouth to mouth is definitely part of it along with making sure the air way is clear and chest compressions there are devices that can be used to protect yourself from coming in contact with their bodily fluids

CuckooAnge, Actually mouth to mouth started to phase out because potential rescuers refused to perform it out of fear of catching something from the victim.

Compression only CPR is lay person CPR. Healthcare CPR still includes compressions and breathing. So it depends on which type you were trained in

Mouth to mouth has been phased out in the last 3 years as studies have found that compressions alone are just as affective if not more so.

CuckooAnge, I beg to differ, the body NEEDS oxygen. Compression alone does not cut it.

I went for abdominal thrusts as the answer. All the other first aid measures described have been in existence for centuries, whereas the Heimlich Manoeuvre specifically (which is what abdominal thrusts normally refers to) has its origins in the past 50 years, described by American physician Henry Heimlich. Measures aimed at cardiopulmonary resuscitation can be traced back to 15th century Persia at least. Texts refer to compressions of the chest and include measures to induce breathing. In 18th century Amsterdam, the Society for the Recovery of Drowned Persons also published resuscitation guidance that includes many of the interventions we use today in basic life support. Yes, the American Heart Association only started formalising training on CPR in 1960s America, but the technique predates American use. The question setter simply has not researched the topic.

what side is now days you can get sued for doing CPR on someone without asking permission and when someone is in cardiac arrest it's impossible to get a response from them to ask permission! but if I see someone dying it would be my first instinct to do what I had to do. EVERYONE should be able to get access to CPR lessons!

Player #11972146, its not to say that it didn't exist or wasn't used until 1960, it was simply studied, proven and patented by a certain group of people.

Lenny the Clam, Everything takes a long time in the medical world, you have to have a lot of evidence to prove efficiency, efficacy and be published before anyone will take you seriously, then you have to still persuade people of its worth. That takes time!

CuckooAnge, Rubbish, where on earth did you get that from ?! Oxygen would depleat in the blood andUST be replaced, or patient would suffer brain damage !

SubstantialFidelity9, I've performed CPR, Heimlich etc.. & have to keep my certifications up to date. Few years ago it was updated by the Red Cross, ONLY chest compressions & singing the song Staying Alive by the Bee Gees keeps the proper rhythm. If the blood isn't pumping breathing won't help.
