Dorania, the painting did not get darker with time. It was painted in a style known as chiaroscuro, from dark to light. It is a daytime scene just with dramatic shadows and composition. It did look darker due to varnish which when removed, still shows the dark shadow effect of chiaroscuro. Tragically, it was cut down on all 4 sides to fit in the Town Hall in 1715, and was slashed by a vandal in the 20th century
