In response to the Coke attack, the Navy invented the "Smart Ship" program, in which Navigation, Maneuvering, Combat Systems and a host of other compartmentalized functional operations were brought into the digital controls era. Meaning, PC control. Using Windows OS. By doing this, all of these functions were replaced and decentralized, so that functionally, you could steer, fire weapons and run at full flank from ANY compartment on the ship. By doing this, critical functions could continue, even taking a huge damage hit to a third of the ship, thereby continuing a Mission. It was invented in Philadelphia, at the defunct Philly Naval Shipyard that had recently been BRACCed. (Base Realignment and Closure Commission). Also housed on those hallowed grounds is the Philadelphia Division of the Naval Surface Warfare Center. Yes, I was part of that. Our first Smart Ship was the USS Ticonderoga. Tico was an awesome ship.

Montana Lady, Yes and no. Al Qaeda is a derivative of the growth of the Taliban. Of which we actually supported in Afghanistans' war with Russia. they began as the Mujahadin. We need Israel as an ally. So these twists exist. Not easy to understand. Not everything is what it seems on the surface. So logic, although valuable scientifically, cannot be applied on a geopolitical theater.

Phiend99, Thank you for your service. People in our country who complain and whine about what's wrong.....have no military in their families. If they did they might have a better understanding of why we set defense!

tystyx, by that logic we should have blown Israel to smithereens when they attacked the USS Liberty in 1967... as should Britain when they bombed the King David Hotel and declared war against them... and if we hadn't kept overthrowing Middle Eastern democracies and their rightful leaders and installing dictators in their places, there would NEVER have been an Al Qaeda in the first place!!!
