Istanbul was originally known as Byzantium in the 7th century BCE. In 330 CE it became known as Constantinople after the Roman emperor Constantine. The city's name was changed to Istanbul in 1930. It is extremely popular with tourists; there is so much to see and do. Well worth visiting.

Frito, I believe you are confused. Constantinople was the capital of the Roman Empire. The citizens of the Roman Empire were simply Romans. Even though there were many ethnic backgrounds among the citizens including Hellenes from the Greek peninsula and the Empire adapted greek as its language, Romans had nothing to do with Hellenes. So, Istanbul belonged to the Romans, never to Hellenes. In fact, when Mehmed II took over the city, he became the Roman emperor, anointed by the Patriarch as well as recognized by all the major kingdoms of the day including the Pope as Roman Emperor. Technically, the Empire lasted until 1923 when the Republic was founded.
