grew up in Missoula Montana, knew this had to be Remington and not Russel,as there is a Charles Russel school there that had every copy of his work in it's library and in pictures all through the school on it's walls and never remembered this picture (after 8 years of seeing them every day you remember) so for the first time I picked someone besides C.Russel for a western painting or sculpture!!!

I live about 100 miles from Jedediah Smith State Park of Northern California. It has the giant redwood trees some that are 2000 plus years old.

This painting is a reminder of the horrible, horrible way everyone used to "break" horses, to be ridden. Even today, after they figured out a gentler, more humane (and infinitely more effective) way to do it, some people still use cruelty.
