MagpieRaven888
Also, the original tales were much "darker" than those read to children nowadays.

I own the collection and handed it down to my kids.We lived in Germany 3 yrs

Interesting to know❣️🤔
DSDA
USAMcK, The original tales were MUCH darker. It was Disney that lightened and brightened and fluffed them up. The original stories had dismemberment, murder, rape and unwed pregnancies sprinkled throughout them.
Lumberjax47
I read and reread their tales so many times as a child. I later lived in Germany for three years. Amazing people and culture.

Me and my little sister were bought a copy of The Grimm's Brothers Fairy Tales by our parents when we were kids. She still has it. Definitely was darker than the tales told nowadays.

LaBella Amare
Awesome. I love books.

Some of the stories are quite violent in the original form. Cinderella’s stepsisters having their feet mangled to fit the shoe for example
Talaith
Disney seriously ruined these stories, they were meant to be moral tales and not all happy endings.
Vic
MagpieRaven888, I’m glad that they were cleaned up,,haha
Chineezy
I wish I had a chance to read that.
Friday
DSDA, When Sleeping Brauty awoke, she had already given birth to twins; a boy and a girl. I believe Snow White had had a baby as well. apparently, these brave and noble princes were doing more than kissing the beautiful, drugged princesses.

MagpieRaven888, Yes far darker than the Disney versions
Edel
Shannarooski, I agree with you. I am German and my grandmother told me the stories. My mother had a book given, not sure if all the stories were in the original book but I loved each and everyone of them. My grandchildren who were brought up in England don't speak German and only know the Disney versions, some are unrecognisable

MagpieRaven888, Indeed they were. In the original Cinderella (actually Russian) the stepmother falls down some stairs and breaks her back, while the stepsisters are blinded by doves at the wedding...
Stephanie.S.
MagpieRaven888, I've read Cinderella in German from the original version. The ugly sisters had their eyes pecked out by birds. There were other differences which made these stories unsuitable for young children.

The world now a day cannot be thankful enough to people like the Grimm brothers, and many other inventors, scientists, academics, discoverers, and many more intelligent people from the past who make the world what it is today.
