masterridley, but did you know that it's only called the Union Jack when flown at sea? When flown over land it's correct title is the Union Flag.

I lived on an 18th century ship when I was a teenager. It will always have great memories for me. Sadly it was sunk off Florida coast and now just a rotting dive site. Forever love my ship, The Lady Frei!

ChocolateLover98781, Wikipedia says “It is sometimes asserted that the term Union Jack properly refers only to naval usage, but this assertion was dismissed by the Flag Institute in 2013 after historical investigations.[6][7][8][note 2]”

fred, Incorrect. When a ship is tied up alongside, the National flag of that country is flown from the bow. Look at any picture of a warship.

ChocolateLover98781, The term "Union Jack" is incorrect. People called it that, but the term "Union Flag" is the correct term. It just happens to be flown from the "JACK". Which is where the term "UNION JACK" came from.
