ARI, each language you learn makes it easier to learn the next, from those you should be able to pick up Portuguese & Italian pretty quickly. I speak/understand Farsi, Arabic, Kurdish, I was surprised the other day at how much Pathan I could understand when one of the Afghani Taliban leaders was talking to reporters.

Guessed wrong, but I shouldn't have. I live in Michigan where there are a couple of close islands that do not allow automobiles. One of those, Mackinaw Island, still has roads for horse-drawn wagons.

While Giethoorn does have roads, it's main "street" is only a canal and a sidewalk. And yes, the Dutch still cycle a lot

Flowergirl, those sure called "pathways"or "paths." Common parlance indicates one is for cars ("roads"), and foot-only routes are known as States above, to give only a couple of those foot-only route nsmes. (Whew!)

This is an urban myth. There are plenty of roads in Giethoorn. That's how they get the dozens of buses full of Chinese tourists in.
