I liked the answer "jumped from the edge of space". It was my understanding that he came so close to the edge of the atmosphere he almost reached space. He must have wanted to be an astronaut.

Chuck Yeager is my Great Uncle. My grandpa Randall whom I never met (also a pilot) was his nephew. My mom always tells me what a swell guy Uncle Chuck was and she was incredibly sad about his passing this year.

I remember as a kid in the 50s hearing sonic boom sounds on a regular basis. I was scared because I thought they were bombs. There some military air bases not far from where I lived in Southern California.
