What is the weight of the Earth’s atmosphere?

I can't believe so many contestants chose "weightless". If it were weightless, that is, if it had no mass, how would airplanes fly? How does "weightless atmosphere" wreak such havoc through tornadoes and hurricanes? How would pure water boil at 212F at sea level if there were no atmosphere pressing down on the bubbles forming at the bottom of the pan?
