Which ingredient is commonly used to make cakes rise?

So many uses for baking powder, makes me wonder if anyone ever tried using it to patch a whole or crack in a wall!

So which ingredient can you bake a cake without-all of these can be swiped out, flourless cakes are very good for you, sugar or honey free is popular, etc.
