What do you call the front glass window of a car?

My husband had a get a new windshield because pebbles flew over the windshield of our car

If the words are different in American English and Commonwealth English, why can't both words be given as one of the options? I have often been unable to recognise the correct answer only because I don't recognise the word(s) used.

I thought Windshield is actually a mirror which protects us from storms 😅😅
