Randall Stone, I think you might be wrong. Yes there was a pyroclastic flow which did kill an awful lot of people, but it was the ash which covered and smothered the people in the towns and encased their bodies in a mummified state that are on show in the likes of Pompey.

Tanya, this is open to debate among scientists. Most would not consider a valcano active if it hasn't shown activity within the last 100 years, some would argue 50 years or less. I haven't found any reports suggesting 10,000 years. I think that would be considered "dormant"
