thanks to British Public Schools, we get the US name for football - "Soccer". Two forms of football were being played - Rugby Football (abbreviated to "rugger") and Association Football (abbreviated to "soccer"). Our US cousins adopted soccer as a name to differentiate it from football which in the rest of the world is known as American Football, which bears a striking resemblance to rugby. Rugby however is a running game whereas American Football with its stop-go format is like an intricate game of chess. Long live ball games!

The English Game was brilliant, the sharp short passing game was developed in Scotland to combat the punt up the park physicality of the game down south, keep the ball make the opposite chase and tire them out. I’d love to see some of today’s top professionals run in hobnail boots on sodden pitch’s where basically anything goes! Dougray Scott did a brilliant documentary about Scottish Football last year it’s worth a watch and sorry but Football will never be Soccer in my house! 👍
