Even w/o being "uninsurable" it's an absolute shame & embarrassment that our government was unwilling to GAURANTEE that the families would be provided for. TYPICAL!

MagicalTorpedo4634, you missed the begin of this question. No insurance company would insure their lives. The government would have provided compensation to families should the mission have had a tragic end. Just like they have families of the crew of 2 space shuttle tragedies.

This is appalling, as these men were National heros!! And, to not give them a grant or basic $1M coverage is just plain WRONG! I understand the principle behind not insuring them b/c of the huge risk involved. However, this is the government, they could afford $3M ($1M per household), but they CHOSE not to. Disgraceful. The families SHOULD have had financial coverage in the event of an astronaut dieing while serving the NATION. Truly embarrassing as a country.
