The recently published 'Go Set a Watchman' is the long-awaited sequel to what book?
Correct answer: To Kill a Mockingbird
ValiantCardinal81804
To kill a mocking Bird is one of my favorite movies.I've never read the book though.
Tincantitan1
And sadly there won't be anymore from Harper Lee as she died the following year (19th February 2016).
FaithfulReader
"Mockingbird" is my favorite book, so I was delighted to know another book was being published. So disappointed!
SQinfoNUTS
I think it's a safe bet that Harper Lee had this stuff into the back of a drawer for decades because it was at best a writing exercise.

ValiantCardinal81804, I've read the book & saw the movie. I enjoyed & appreciated them both, but in a different way & for different reasons. I'm still trying to sort out exactly why. For me, the book & movie have a different mood & tone that I can't explain. Both are worth the time & experience.

Gem cart, Atticus is a fictional character and not the same character between the books. The unpublished work should never have been published, everyone says it is awful.

Player #2964204, the "newest book was a big disappointment to me, the Atticus Finch that I so admired became just another racist in a small southern town, and I threw the book in the garbage, where I believe it belongs

trinityregina1, You have much to learn about our humanity. Ours is a journey of learning and growth. If Atticus was the racist in the Watchman, that you claim, and became the man he was in the Mockingbird, then he should be celebrated all the more. Not many of us deal effectively with
The bigotries and biases that we were raised with. Moving the dial toward becoming a better person should always be celebrated. Go see if the garbage collector hasn’t come and put the Watchman back on the shelf where it belongs.

ValiantCardinal81804, the movie is almost exactly as the book is written! it is my favorite book, and I always have a copy. I was born in ny, raised in Florida, and quite familiar with bigotry in the south. a Puerto Rican Jew growing up in the south was not an easy ride, but it beat the hell out of maycomb county!

ValiantCardinal81804, Oddly enough, I've never seen the film but the book is wonderful.

Maestra, I was warned not to read it.

jema, Have you read it???
me
I reread "To Kill a Mockingbird " before reading "Go Set a Watchman ". Did anyone else find the errors/contradictions?
Mars V
Her family usurped control and had it published as a sequel against her wishes. I want my $25 back, but to their credit, they saw the opportunity, and cashed in. Don’t read it; it was the garbage that all great writers need to plow through to get to the masterpiece.
Mars V
It’s not a sequel; it’s a scam. She never wanted it published. I recycled my long-awaited copy.

Correction: “white savior story” (a lil’ typo)
Maestra
TKAM has a special place in my heart. So many heroes in it. Revisionists want to discount it & say it’s a “white savior” sorry. No. It’s not. The biggest hero is Tom Robinson. Day in and day out he was kind to one of the loneliest people in town. He expected no reward- he did it because he was a good person and he paid for it with his life. Arthur “Boo” Radley was also another hero because of his selfless acts (putting a blanket on Scout, saving the children from Bob Ewell). Jem was a hero too - looking out for his sister. And of course Atticus was too - but this story isn’t just about him.
I don’t know if I can bring myself to read “Go Set a Watchman.”

JSSmal270, I would compare it to the difference between an excellent wine and a mediocre wine, or for hard drinkers, fine Bourbon & Scotch compared to less so.

I’ve heard the watchman was s hoax to make money. Highly doubtful Atticus would be racist. Originally to kill a mocking bird was titled Atticus

Taranchalanche, exactly

FaithfulReader, agree entirely. Very disappointing!
Taranchalanche
FaithfulReader, why disappointed? I am giddy to know another book exists.
