Why do humans pay so much for shiny clear things I mean honestly it's just a mineral

Many people don't realize that sapphires & rubies are two different colors of the same mineral, called corundum.

sfleetwood2, that's not hard to do. Diamonds aren't rare, the market is just controlled to ensure that too many are not released at once which keeps their price artificially inflated. So many precious stones are more expensive than diamonds, including sapphires, rubies, emeralds, bixbite (extremely rare red emeralds only found in Utah), alexandrite, tanzanite, jadeite, natural pearls, etc.

thilly13, We used to go fossicking in NSW any found an eight carat star sapphire and a four carat blue. Had them cut but still haven't put them in anything. A couples who came to our dog reckoned stars were rubbish. I think they were jealousy.

Nutshell, Exactly! Ruby has chromium atoms replacing aluminum or in between alumina units (as an impurity). It reflects visible radiation closer to infrarred, hence the colour. Berillyum laced sapphires are Yellow, for instance. Source: am a chemist and Chemical engineer, specialty is Materials Science.

Most valuable is ambiguous. By weight, I bet pink sapphires are more valuable because they are rarer. When talking about gems in general, by carat makes more sense than specific gems. Poorly phrased question

Actually, deep red is the most valuable, so much so that they're called ru he's. They are identical to sapphires except for color. It's all gem-quality corundum.
