thilly13, We used to go fossicking in NSW any found an eight carat star sapphire and a four carat blue. Had them cut but still haven't put them in anything. A couples who came to our dog reckoned stars were rubbish. I think they were jealousy.

Nutshell, Exactly! Ruby has chromium atoms replacing aluminum or in between alumina units (as an impurity). It reflects visible radiation closer to infrarred, hence the colour. Berillyum laced sapphires are Yellow, for instance.

Actually, deep red is the most valuable, so much so that they're called ru he's. They are identical to sapphires except for color. It's all gem-quality corundum.
