had Lee chosen to lead the US Army, i doubt the war would have lasted a year. As it was, his heart was more Virginian than American. God rest them all and may we never see another conflict like the civil war again.

Player #8801495, If that were the fact, King David and King Solomon were not honorable because they both owned slaves. It was a different time in history. what was correct then is not true for today. Get over the past and just make a better future 😉

Our brother is buried in Arlington Cemetery. He volunteered for the Army right out of high school at age 17. He served 40 years in the Army. He loved America and the Army. He died at age 57. He served twice in Vietnam and in Japan to name two I miss him so much. rip

Tariffs, economics, states rights vs federal, and other reasons, besides slavery, led to the civil war.

MuscularDemigod69239, of course. It was about states' rights regarding what exactly? Zoning regulations? Seat belt laws? Hmm...Oh, wait, I remember, slavery! I can't believe South apologists are still trotting out that weak crap 150 years later

Gregdoubleyou, not just the South's fault though. I was taught the same in NY. it's what schools use to teach the concept of state sovereignty vs. federal power (i.e. states' rights). it's the overarching theme taught about American government. but yes, it was states' rights for slavery.

Player #2964204, I don't think the land that became Arlington National Cemetery was Lee's at all. His family was broke by the time he was at West Point, the farm belonged to Lee's father-in-law. Lee was also supposed to have freed all the slaves there upon his father-in-law's death but he ignored the will and instead broke up their families, sold off the children and was by all accounts very harsh with them. Anyhow, after the war the US government did try to take the farm because they'd buried some bodies there (out of necessity) during the war. Lee's grandson sued and his case was eventually heard by the US Supreme Court which ruled in his favor. So the government bought the land at a fair market price and afterward Arlington National Cemetery was created. (It's been a while since I took US History, so my details may not be perfect... but they're close.)

RCBACK1718, You do know very few were wealthy enough to own slaves. So, why would they fight to keep something they didn’t have?

catdavidson666, lol economic reasons? Like, who's going to run our agrarian economy if slaves are to be freed? Those economic reasons?

JSpree, Melech Daweed and Sholomo owned servants or helpmates. Nothing compared to the brutal and horrendous treatment in this country. Get over the past is outdated. Learning from the past not to repeat history.

JSpree, slavery in that period was different. People could offer themselves as indentured servants or were captured during conquests. The captured were freed after a period of time, unlike chattel slavery in America. People learn from the past, and nobody needs to get over anything!

Thunderduck, No - not economics! I think Lincoln meant to first preserve the Union, and then, when things stabilized, go after getting rid of slavery. If the country broke into 2 pieces, he would have had no chance to address the evil of Southern slavery at all.

I'm not a Southern, but I think over all Gen Lee was a more principled person than most people in government today.

catdavidson666, True, true. Lincoln himself said that if he could prevent war by freeing all the slaves, he would do that. If he could prevent war by making slavery legal, he would do that as well. It really came down to economics...
