It was built, like the other museums in the area, using the profits from the proceeds of the 1851, as the Central Hall of Arts and Science. Unfortunately Prince Albert died shortly before completion and some of the funds used to build the Albert Memorial, and the re-named Albert Hall was only financed by selling 999 year leases on the seats.
Although Victoria opened and visited the Hall several times she was always upset by the Memorial, and travelled with the coaches blinds closed.
