It was the mismanagement by the government not the blight that caused the Famine. The poor were dependent on a single variety of a single vegetable - all that would grow in the poor soil they had access to.(The Irish Lumper).
When the Blight struck they had nothing. The country continued to export vast amounts of other food that the poor could not afford. And the govt. refused to send aid in case it made the poor " idle".
N.B. The Lumper has been re - created and is now being grown in schools to show the children.
