I am surprised at the reason given for the different position of buttons. I was told it was because right handed men ( the majority) had weapons - swords, later guns, on the left hip. And it was easier to sweep the garment aside. Anyway rich men are as likely to have a valet as women a maid, so that argument doesnt convince me !
