Which is why God's law is perfect - love your enemies, do good to them that hate you, pray for those who despitefully use you, etc.

Actually, the philosophy of "an eye for an eye" is meant to restrict punishment of a crime to only penalties that were proportionate to the original crime. This is in contrast to a system where someone could be put to death for committing a minor offence against another of higher social status (say a peasant stealing food from a prince).

TheAngieIshmael, If that's true then why does the religious right in America support the death penalty, torture, strike first wars etc. Gandi was also Hindu.

Player #ussdefiant, no, because we'd want revenge for that one eye and end up losing both, now, wouldn't we?

Mahatma Gandhi had never said this. It was from the film " Gandhi"

Really not that simple and straight forward. Love your enemy, for example I kill your son or wife would you give me a hug or kiss me? I don't think so. It is easy to say it when you're not involved.
