What was the origin of the Marathon race?

I think the Athenian runner died of exhaustion after delivering his message.

The distance between Marathon and Athens is much greater than 26 miles. The distance of 26.2 miles was decided on at the 1908 London Olympics because it was the distance from Windsor (where they started for a run past the royals) to the stadium.

The name of the runner was Pheidippidis.

According to the historian Herodotus, Pheidippidis was the messenger sent from the Athenians to Sparta to ask their help before the battle in Marathon. He ran a distance of 200km in 2 days.
