Which instrument is known for producing deep, resonant sounds and is played with mallets?

Mallets? I play drum for more than 40 years and never heard drum sticks called mallets?

I associate mallets with xylophones.

Mallets would be more appropriate with gongs

This, to me would apply to a kettle drum. One does not use a mallet on a standard drum kit. Plus , the sounds created are not always deep in tone .
