Diver Dan, my father served in the Aleutians also during Attu. Ocean going tug and P.T. boat also. He said Japanese subs were all over the place.

Like Diver Dan, my Father was in the Air Corp but in this case stationed at Fairbanks. Although the battle is largely forgotten, it apparently had huge implications for the Japanese as far as their Stragic Plan to join forces with the Nazis. There is good reason they called them the Greatest Generation.

FuschiaFire56652, you are right. While we could let Hawaii slide (now it's a state, no boots on the ground, etc.), like Palmyra, Guam is definitely still a US territory, and we most certainly sent US ground troops in... so it looks like Wikipedia has failed us with this answer.

The learning channel had a documentary on the building of the Al-Can highway and the battle. Perma frost was their battle building the road. Most people don't know about the bomb shelters in SF and the mini 2 man subs that invaded the Golden Gate..."loose lips sink ships"

Great question. We need more history. Most Americans are unaware that there was hand to hand fighting on American soil during WW2. The Alaska Hwy was built in Canada because there was no land access to Alaska and we, the U S, couldn't defend it during the war. level 117

I'm from Alaska and part of the US maintaining hold of the Aleutians is Alaska natives were used and more adept to the cold and terrible weather where the Japanese were not.
