Clowns hide who they really are. Not to mention most of the make up is quite disturbing. It's a very rational fear.

Joseph Grimaldi was the first person to embody the characters and aspects of a clown as we know them today. every clown's make up is individual and unique. New clown faces are painted onto a blown egg, registered and copyrighted. I believe even Pennywise's makeup is registered...

I always found clowns creepy and scary . I was with my mother in the car once. A clown was freaking driving a car and pulled up next to us . At the light , he turned his head slowly and robotically and stared at us . It even scared by mother . We got away from him as fast as we could

The first time I saw clowns was at a circus and I thought they were another animal, like the monkeys, lions and bears. I thought it was rude they let these animals go into the crowds, when they did not let the other animals go into the crowd. it did not help when one of these animals took an interest in me hiding behind my mom. I was terrified, because adults in my world did not act this way. Them being animals made more sense in my 5 year old brain.
