charlieCamp, Indeed and after all of the Sullivan brothers died laws were passed so that no brothers could serve on the same ship together and in an attempt to preserve the family name, at least one son cannot be sent to a war zone.

After the loss of the five Sullivan brothers during world war II dying while serving on the same ship the military now will not put siblings in the same unit so such a tragedy will not occur again.

my great grandmother had 10 sons and 4 daughters, before WWI. After the war she had: 1 son who had been gassed, and died shortly after. 1 son who was blind and had no legs, and 1 physically healthy son, who never spoke again. But all 4 daughters were okay.

It was more than enlisting. At one point during the war, every able-bodied man had to go. It eventually got to the point where the government declared male high school seniors in the middle of their senior years as high school graduates and they then were shipped overseas.
