theftrain1960, While the rain may be considered an act of nature, the reservoir at the top was an act of greed. some of the national's wealthiest families built a lake resort for summer fun. To speed up the construction timeline, shortcuts were taken and warnings ignored so the lake and its amenities could be enjoyed as soon as possible, without regard for the lives below. None of the members of the resort perished.

Cymp, Johnston also flooded in 1939 and 1977. I remember the 1977 flood. The death tolls of these two were nowhere near this one, but I remember one of our teachers committed suicide because he found his whole family deceased during the cleanup. I live about 20 miles from Johnstown.

I read a book about this tragedy. Over 2000 dead because a hunting club at the top of the canyon didn't properly maintain their earthen dam.

WHY DIDNT YOU BOTHER TO MENTION WHY THE DAM BROKE? GREED AND ELITISM CAUSED THAT TRAGEDY.

Johnstown is an amazing place that helped make the USA what it is. Sadly, like many other small cities and towns, it has become a relic. A place forgotten, and left to suffer it's own demise, as businesses worried more about their bottom line than the people and places that helped make them what they became.

PointyDormouse60089, I agree. yes I've seen titanic...but I HATE that it revolved around a love story between 2 teenagers. A better history and knowledge of the passengers that were lost. Not just the rich in first class, also the stories revolving the people in 2nd and 3rd class.
