me, I was there when it happened in 1997. My ship was was part of a 5 day port visit when it happened.

UndercoverBoss21370, I was there too. I was singing at the Hotel Shangri-la. I remember it rained so hard there were no fireworks and the next day the sun was shining, all signs of Britain were gone and that night, the fireworks were spectacular!

Olorin, The British wanted to increase trade in that area. China did not. The Emperor of China (rather tersely) informed Queen Victoria of their lack of interest in further trade. So in response, the British flooded the region with opium.
