Several years ago I stood on top of the tower and looked out over the town. The same spot Galileo stood, amazing history.

Errrmm. Pretty sure I just answered the same question but as 'observation tower' "correctly"...
I am not a number.
The tower is built on silt which is unstable as a substrate; it started to lean whilst still being built and you can see they tried to correct the shape during building as at least one level is not perfect shape.
More recently they have been correcting the lean by gradually removing some of the silt from underneath, from the side which is higher.
For a period of time from 1990s, people were not allowed up because it was precarious, but now it is open again.

I had this question before with a different set of answers.

MystalCraze, It was used as an observation tower 'during the war' as the other question correctly stated. But it was built as a bell tower as this question correctly states.
Artie
I actually knew this.

Went there on a shore excursion during a Med cruise. Saw the Bell Tower but couldn't go inside. Amazing structure. The church (cathedral) was built before the Bell Tower. It took a very long time to build due to primitive equipment, lack of qualified stone masons, money, and frequent wars or squirmiishes between enemies.

akeem , 20th century was the 1900s. The years 1-100 is the 1st century. 101-200 is the 2nd century. Hope this helps for those who are confused. Thos is the only way I can remember also.

The foundations it was built on that causes it to lean has also protected it from at least 4 powerful earthquakes.
