Who invented "frequency-hopping spread spectrum" and an element of the modern day Wi-Fi?
Correct answer: George Antheil and Hedy Lamarr

LJ
Jaw dropping. No formal military experience, some second hand knowledge and a musician put this together.

Smart and beautifull !!

I don't know why his name apears 1st, as the impetus for the invention as well as most of the development was HER idea. Also, it was designed as a method to PREVENT the Germans from "tracking and jamming" OUR torpedoes. Lastly, she never made a dime for this invention used all over the world for 100's of sytems.

Hedy, you rock...I own her autobiography "Hedy's Folly". Great read.

she doesn't get the credit she deserves

That was mostly Hedy Lamarr, though, so maybe her name could appear first on the answer...

The picture was a bit of a hint!

There is a documentary on the subject on Netflix, it is eye opening.

Nutshell
I LOVED her as a teenager!
My father would yell at me, "You can be beautiful, 'Nutshell', or you can be smart but people can only steal ONE of those things from you"
So... I'd finish getting ready for my date, give him a kiss on the cheek and tell him, "Remember Hedy Lamar, dad? I'll be home before curfew!'
"garunph. fine."
(I apologize for accidentally posting my last comment too soon!)

Nutshell
OMG! The comments here shocked me, I thought more people knew this... this was not the only thing she did. She was SO smart and just amazing!

Hedy LaMarr was a self-taught inventor and problem-solver. She was inspired by Antheil's work in synchronizing note hopping. LaMarr reasoned that rapid frequency-hopping could prevent our enemies from jamming our torpedoes. Howard Hughes recognized LaMarr's intelligence and introduced her to the scientists at his aircraft factory. He provided equipment for her experiments. I read that Hedy LaMarr knew that no one in government would look at her idea without a man's name on it--just another sign of the times. The Navy didn't "wait till the patent ran out." It was an idea for technology that had to be built, perfected, and built again. Hedy LaMarr's brilliant technology was first used by the US Military during a world-shaking little event called The Cuban Missile Crisis.

There is a documentary entitled Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story, which goes into great depth about this invention and her contribution to it. Also, at first, the invention was ignored by the military because she was "just an actress" and how could she invention something that complicated. SMH
