Eek! It's hard enough for trained singers to hit the notes sober, can you imagine a bunch of drunks trying it?!? Spare my ears! 😳

jerezaa, Maybe if you read what the American revolutionary war is about, you would understand why it's important to the U.S. Seriously if the Patriots at the time didn't fight for our freedoms, most of us would not be born here in America, we'd still be under the British Monarch.....People take for granted our freedoms we have everyday....They don't understand the price that was paid, a very heavy price.

Can you imagine what it would be like to be in a boat surrounded by gunfire etc? My song would begin "oh my God we're all gonna die"

I don't care much for a national anthem to be about a war. I'd rather have "This Land is My Land, This Land is Your Land" or "America the Beautiful"

jerezaa, The Star Spangled Banner was written as the British waged a bombing onslaught on an American military post. The British general ordered his troops to aim all cannons at the flag after the Americans refused to lower it in surrender. At the"Dawn's early light" the flag was still standing because it was being held up by soldiers in defiance who refused to surrender despite being attacked throughout the night. Anyone who ones during the anthem doesn't deserve to be an American. How'd that work out for Kapernick? Ended his career.

I love this song and how it came about. Imagine being Francis Scott Key. Imagine penning those words, the fear of the men that were holding up that flag while being bombarded with all the cannon fire from the British Navy. The history is quite remarkable and awe inspiring. The only other song that comes close to being an anthem would be "My Country Tis of Thee". Seriously, I wouldn't change our anthem.

Read the comments below before you kneel during the National Anthem. The Anthem, and the flag, DO NOT stand for the government or the police ! They stand for all the Dead American Patriots whose dead bodies were piled up supporting that flag so that it would not fall ! Find ANOTHER way to protest !

jerezaa, don't forget to add Kate Smith's rendition of God Bless America? Back in the day she sang that on her TV show. I think those lyrics take in most of the Country. I'm sure you can Google Ms. Smith singing the song somewhere on the Internet

Player #24786540, actually most of us wouldn't exist much less even set foot on "American soil". most of us are immigrants or immigrant born. I'm 5th gen German immigrant on one side and 6th gen Irish immigrant on the other along with a mix of a bunch of other stuff. Nowhere in the world other than America would my ancestors have met in order for me to have the heritage I have. It's the same way with most Americans who have been here more than a few generations.

Rich people created patriotism to trick poor people into fighting their wars, which is what this song successfully incites in people.

I prefer the song, America, sometimes referred to as My Country Tis of Thee, which best represents all the good of the USA. The Star Spangled Banner is just to devisive.

Nutshell, maybe being drunk helps.Who knows? I always thought "My Country 'tis of Thee" would be nice, but the British use that tune for "God Save the Queen".

According to John Legend, it is a "weak song" even he can't "sing very well". Can't or won't?

My only problem with America the beautiful and This land is your land is that they both draw on specific geographical locations of the United States in their lyrics. That could be awkward if are national boundaries ever change.

Since distributing new music in that time was difficult, It was common practice for new lyrics to be written to familiar tunes.. The news papers would post lyrics and inform the readers of the tune to follow.
