The official causes of death were lobar pneumonia and a bleeding ulcer, but Parker also had an advanced case of cirrhosis and had suffered a heart attack. The coroner who performed his autopsy mistakenly estimated Parker's 34-year-old body to be between 50 and 60 years of age.[32]

nimblemoon, in order to eat while on the road, Bird and his band mates would steal chickens, yard birds, the name stuck.

nimblemoon, in those days the nickname yardbird often denoted someone who had been in prison... but there is another story about Charlie Parker ... "Jazz pianist Jay McShann backs up the story in an interview in 1999: Charlie [Parker] yelled, 'Back up. You hit a yardbird!' He got out of the car and got it and carried the chicken on into Lincoln. He had it cooked and ate it all in one sitting."

Should also be mentioned his penchant for fried chicken which only served to underscore his remarkable nickname.
