Tanya, perhaps they didn't explain this well. creme brulee doesn't have flames. the top is heated until it looks toasted.

Chris, no. A broiler is when only the top element of the oven is on. Also, a salamander broils.

When looking at cooking (UK) if you’re cooking meat etc from underneath it is grilling , if the heat source is above that is a salamander, but it’s more often incorrectly called a grill
