In visible spectrum light waves can be absorbed, reflected or transmitted by the objects. An object appear black because it absorbs all the light frequencies that interacts with. The opposite i.e. the reflection of all light frequencies gives colour white. An object that reflects a specific light frequency and absorbs all the others have the colour of the reflected frequency.
